It has been a weekend of Polish hip-hop and drum and bass at the Bongo Club. But even when you throw in the rock’n'roll ping pong, it won’t be enough to save it. One of Edinburgh’s most popular small music venues, it has been the launch pad for bands from the Scissor Sisters to Kasabian who played here before they became stadium-sized acts playing to stadium-sized crowds. Yet this will be its last summer as the Bongo faces closure at the end of August, one of an increasing number of live venues across the UK shutting down. (more…)

Since the company was founded 50 years ago, Marshall has become one of the most recognisable and iconic names in rock guitar, with the company’s unmistakable livery gracing stages across the globe. Jim Marshall started out as a drum kit retailer but began building amplifiers in the early 1960s, setting out to create a new valve guitar amplifier, using the Fender Bassman circuit as a model. With the sixth prototype, he hit upon ‘the Marshall sound’. The rest is history. (more…)

Partners bring vision and dynamics to nightclub industry
by Paul Walker
To be fair, the Bangkok private sector has worked hard to keep the entertainment flag high and like most major cities in the world, it hosts a vibrant nightlife embracing every kind of music and venue, catering to all tastes – however high or low you fly. The disparate clubbing scene took off in the late ‘70s, and then grew with a vengeance in the late nineties when Q-Bar arrived to challenge Narcissus and others, followed closely by Bed Supper Club and Koi on Soi 20. Across town in places like RCA, Ekkamai and elsewhere, there are maybe a dozen or more serious nightclubs of varying quality where the kids are getting down.
But truth be told, most clubs remain a stale product of the last century while only the likes of Glow and Q-Bar have made any attempt to really up their game to attract a new and discerning demographic animal – the switched on, pre-party yuppies with attitude, those who have been there and seen that. Best Bangkok night markets
By Julz Kay and Tina Hsiao
When you’ve had your fill of fancy malls and brand boutiques, Bangkok’s night markets open your wallet to whole new set of retail delights under the moonlight. Open for business the minute the sun dips below the city skyline, explore and forage in a well-stocked world of whimsical products and flexible price tags, browsing everything from tourist tack to authentic antiques, fragrant flora to fight-ready flick knives. The subtext for Bangkok’s street traders seems to be “if we sell it, they’ll buy it,” and like it or not, you probably will. It requires a little commitment to find and make the most of the markets listed here, but your efforts will be justly rewarded. Keep in mind: it’s best to avoid Monday, when a city-wide ban on street vendors is loosely observed. (more…)MUSIC INDUSTRY REDEFINED: End Of The Record Label January 30, 2012

“I’m Down With…Breaks Co-Op
By Elton John
My favorite album at the moment is by a New Zealand three-piece called Breaks Co-Op. ‘Sound Inside’ is a chill-out disc that sounds a little like Crosby, Stills and Nash. It’s brilliant, wonderful. Since I bought it in the store, I’ve played it for so many people. I played it for the head of my record company today. I’m on Universal and Breaks Co-Op is on EMI, but he said it was probably one of the best records he’s heard all year. It just kills me that these albums come out and they don’t sell or don’t get the right promotion. Everyone I’ve given it to – from the Killers to the Scissor Sisters – have all freaked out.”

Peter Frampton’s 1954 Les Paul Found January 5, 2012

A 1954 Gibson Les Paul that Peter Frampton played during his Humble Pie and solo days has been found after investigation by two Frampton fans. The guitar had been presumed lost in a 1980 cargo plane crash. The Curaçao Tourist Board acquired the guitar and experts from Gibson Guitar confirmed it was, indeed, the missing guitar, long missing from Frampton’s collection. Frampton was given the guitar in 1970 by a man named Mark Mariana at a Humble Pie gig at the Fillmore West. Frampton borrowed Mariana’s guitar for the show and afterward tried to buy it from him. “But to my surprise he said he couldn’t sell it to me – he wanted to give it to me!” he said. (more…)
