The Jungle casts an eye on the last half-century of gadgetry wonders from the world of music. Recently a true musical legend died. This week a true musical tech legend turned 30. The Sony Walkman will be celebrating its anniversary in a world that it has not only dramatically helped shape, but one in which its name still lives on strong as a bastion of the digital music revolution. Without a shadow of a doubt, Sony’s portable music box altered the way we think about and enjoy music forever, and such an achievement has got us thinking about all the other innovations in music that should be celebrated and revered with just as much gusto. Thus, we’ve compiled a VIEW of the top innovations in music tech over the last 50 years. As Friedrich Nietzsche once said: “Life without music would be a mistake.” CLICK FOR THE LIST.

Tom Waits is a born storyteller who loves a good yarn, and like the fast-talking characters who populate his songs, you’re never quite sure if he’s on the level. “The truth is overrated,” he said during this conversation, and you get the feeling those are words he lives by.
Waits is supporting a new album, Bad as Me, which is out next week. His last proper full-length (not counting 2006′s three-disc set, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards) was 2004′s Real Gone, but this collection feels like a very different beast. Where Real Gone was noisy and harsh, Bad as Me is a batch of short, intensely focused songs that have many distinctive production elements and a few new wrinkles. There are noisy political songs, tender ballads, extended jokes. Crafting shorter tracks was a conscious decision suggested by Waits’ wife and collaborator, Kathleen Brennan: “Get in, get out. No fucking around.”
We spoke with Waits via telephone from California. When we asked where he was, he claimed to be at the barber shop. We couldn’t hear any clippers in the background.
“Songs are pretty easy. They are small, they are modular, they are about as big as a bagel.”

In 1960 to 1963 Gibson changed the body of the Gibson Les Paul standard to an SG type body with two symetrical pointed horns or cutaways. They had thinner necks and were called the Gibson SG Les Paul Standard model. Some prototypes were made in late 1960 with “Les Paul Model” on the peghead, but they were officially produced and sold in 1961 at a list price of $310 with crown peghead inlays. The guitar had two humbuckers (PAF), a Les Paul logo on the truss rod cover, side-pull vibrato, mahogany body, cherry red finish, a small black pickguard covering about 1/5 of the body, and had trapezoid inlay blocks on the fingerboard. In 1962, some models had inlaid ebony blocks on the tailpiece. In Late 1963, they had Gibson maestro vibrolas (lyre-style covers) and Gibson took out the Les Paul logo on the truss rod, made the necks a little larger and better built, and renamed the guitar the Gibson SG Standard: (more…)
Streams Under Pressure November 19, 2011

Following a study that claims that streaming music is damaging to record sales, a distributor representing more than 200 labels has withdrawn its entire catalogue from Spotify, Napster, Simfy and Rdio. The study, which was conducted by NPD Group and NARM, came out with results suggesting that subscription services — where you pay a flat fee each month to access a giant jukebox in the sky, rather than owning individual tracks — is discouraging other forms of music purchasing. You can find the further details of that study over at Digital Music News. (more…)
