  3. I am a blues singer and songwriter and I live in the USA. I have been trying to find radio stations in Thailand which play blues but I cannot seem to find any. I was wondering if anyone can recommend any radio stations and/or provide their website addresses. I am eager to have my songs heard in my favorite country.

    • correct me if I am wrong – but all the thai radio stations come under the military “umbrella” here…a couple of stations play top 40 hits – and have a few expat falung announcers… and yes lots of thai talk shows with call in questions and comments – but I believe that all stations have to go thru some sort of gov vetting…as far as know there are no small “independant” niche stations that can play whatever they want…and some thai’s do like blues and classic rock- just not profitable enuff I think

      • Stavros, Thailand has 204 AM stations, 334 FM stations and six short wave broadcasters at least. As is the case with television, radio broadcasting is supposed to be regulated by the Broadcasting Commission (BC). However, because of delays in establishing the NBC, radio frequencies remain in the hands of a plethora of government agencies, including the military, state universities, the Posts and Telegraph Department, the Public Relations Department (PRD) (National Broadcasting Services of Thailand) and MCOT. These agencies operate several stations directly, while the remainder are leased out to private content providers. It is estimated that there are 4,000 known “illegal” community radio stations in Thailand. Some critics claim that the actual number of “unlicensed” community radio stations are twice that of government estimates.

  8. Hi guys. I’m always puzzled by the complete lack of soul music in Bangkok. There’s jazz, blues, and far too much (awful) pop, but no soul. So … I am a vocalist looking to perhaps jam, test the water with anyone who’s interested. I’m happy for it to just be a laugh at first, and see what happens. My focus is soul (especially Northern, but I won’t get too optimistic about that) – think Smokey, Temptations, Jackie Wilson etc etc – though I would also consider doing some quality 60s stuff, esp with a Mod flavour.     • In years past I’ve seen this guitar model (Brian May) for sale in that guitar & Amp shop in Siam Discovery, i.e. the shop near where the walking bridge entry from MBK is. Also suggest you consider the Ernie Ball Music Man 25th anniversary which similar PU switching combinations, very playable and a better built guitar (but maybe not with the same coolness factor) and I’ve seen this model (used) in that shop on the M floor of Phantip.

  34. Hey there, if you’re after an experienced bass player with great ears and backing vocals who can also add some interesting textures to your duo/ band I may be your guy. I read (was in a Zappa Big Band http://youtu.be/2Wi89rv4n1w), can improvise, play straight ahead (Bon Jovi, Bryan Adams tribute bands), add ideas to your originals (www.ecliptic.com.au). 6 string bass through Roland GR55. (I was the bassist for Roland Australia’s launch of the GR55 in Australia and New Zealand). I also play piano if that helps. Very easy to get along with, no ego. Influences from ECM records to Radiohead, John Patitucci, Jonas Hellborg, Bill Frisell, jazz, modern classical, rock etc etc. Although this probably doesn’t sound like it, equally happy playing 4 hour pub covers sets!

      I’ve been looking for musicians in this country for pretty long time, but meet only those who wanna play covers in bars for money, but nothing more. I’m more than that and keep believing that there are some guys like me just sitting at home and waiting for something special. If you’re young, confident, creative, know what you want and have some musician skill whether it’s singing, songwriting DJing, or playing any music instruments, then feel free to contact me and we’ll see what might happen.

      I’m 24 years old and I’m a big fan of music that mostly belongs to rock, but open-minded to try out everything. I listen to bands such as Incubus, The Used, Papa Roach, Funeral For A Friend, Skindred, U2, Coldplay, Angels And Airwaves, Kings Of Leon and many many more.

      I little bit play different music instruments sometimes, but consider myself as a guitar player. At least I need a drummer and bassist, but if you see yourself as a great front man, then it’s perfect. There are some proper stuff in my room that allow me to produce the music such as guitars, bass, multiple effect pedals, midi-keyboard, studio microphone, tube preamp, propellerhead balance interface, propellerhead reason 6.5 software and laptop with good performance, but I can’t handle it all alone, so if you’re for example bassist, but left your bass in your home country and can’t wait to play again, then contact me and we’ll see what happens.

  54. hi folks, im selling a 4/4 upright bass with a hardcase. it’s just too big for me to travel with. i bought it in İstanbul. it is in used condition, i played with a street band for a while, so it has the varnish scratched off the edges. it plays fine though, the strings are nice and low and it is easy to play. comes with a gigantic hardcase i payed a fortune for 6 months ago, a bow i never used, and a old softcase. available to see at ‘second music’ shop in pratunam. ideal for bassists who want to get started with upright, without dishing out for a full priced new bass. my price is 10 000 baht and is the lowest im considering. otherwise i will just drag it on with me to hong kong next week.

If you’re only into 70′s and 80′s hard rock, we love it, but audiences in Sihanoukville don’t want to listen to it and they certainly can’t dance to it!
    We plan to rehearse for a month or two to learn 40+ songs, but there’s no reason why we can’t take to the stage before then and support the current house and guest bands with a short set.

    • You’re usually better off agreeing an all in price with the band and let them rent the PA, drums and any other gear they need. That way they can’t complain the gear was no good. Working bands know who to call for gear and there are lots of choices.

    • I don’t know what you mean by a junior drum set but I have seen kids as young as 7 years old playing happily on a full size kit after appropriate adjustments. Usually what are sold as “junior” or “starter” kits are low quality affairs with shells made from inferior wood and poorly cut leading edges that will never sound good, even after you have ditched the cheap factory heads for something better. That is without talking about the cheap hardware and the trash can lids that are laughingly supplied as cymbals. Actually the bass drum governs the height of the kit. A standard rock bass drum is 22 inches but you can also get 20, 18 and 16 inch drums, the smaller sizes being more suitable for jazz. Also going for smaller toms than the standard rock set up would reduce the overall bulk of the kit. Don’t get a poor quality kit, as it will never sound good, whatever you do to it, and you will be quickly discouraged.

    I am offering for sale my very clean Marshall (vintage year 1968) JMP 1930 hand-built tube amplifier. Made in England. I have owned this amp for about 8 years, and it is in excellent and beautiful original condition, and has warm tone for days…years in fact. Marshall specs stated this was a 10 watts rms (but techs rate it at closer to 13 watts rms), with two (2) original 10” Celestion speakers. It is the perfect studio (small club gig) all valve combo, where it achieves that nasty-grind-overdrive sound sought after in the early Marshalls…no peddles needed!   165. Vintage ’76 Fender Dual Showman Reverb Amp – Excellent Condition – THB29900 (Bangkok)

    Up for sale is my mid 70’s Fender Dual Showman® Reverb guitar amplifier. I purchased this amp in the SF Bay Area in 1978 from the original owner and it has never failed me. I hand-carried it to Bangkok (9yrs ago) for my gigs here. These Showman amps are bullet-proof and indestructible. These are all-tube, hand-soldered point-to-point amps, and are Fenders ‘workhorse professional’ amps (same circuitry and power as Fender Twin Reverb). This amp is in excellent condition and in perfect working order. Before I brought it out, I had The Amp Lab of Redwood City, CA go over the amp and restore (blackface) some of the ‘60’s charm to the circuitry. The tolex has normal wear and looks great for its age. Sounding crisp, with that Fender chime, and full-bodied at all volume levels…however, this amp will scream as it pushes a beefy 100 watts RMS. Beautiful, clean vintage Fender tone all the way, and Reverb that sings. Loves peddles. This amp is a fine example of the early-mid Fender Silver-face era amplifiers. This amp comes with a custom-built non-Fender 2×12” cab loaded with excellent condition vintage ‘69 Fender/Oxford speakers, they sound great. (I have a second identical 2×12 speaker cabinet also available). I will also include an ultra heavy-duty 110/220 power transformer for all your gigs around town. I do not care how much money you are able to spend on a new amp, they will never sound like these vintage gems.

I differ from many guitarists in the sense that I prefer a laid-back style with a very atmospheric/ambient feel as opposed to overplaying tired rock licks, however I’m certainly able to step it up when needed and I’m quite flexible stylistically, but anything modern jazz or soul oriented is my personal cup of tea.
