Michael Bernard “Mike” Bloomfield (July 28, 1943 – February 15, 1981) was an American musicianguitarist, and composer, born in Chicago, Illinois, who became one of the first popular music superstars of the 1960s to earn his reputation almost entirely on his instrumental prowess, since he rarely sang before 1969–70. Respected for his fluid guitar playing, Bloomfield knew and played with many of Chicago’s blues legends even before he achieved individual fame, and was one of the primary influences on the mid-to-late 1960s revival of classic Chicago and other styles of  blues music. In 2003 he was ranked at number 22 on Rolling Stone‘s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”.

Tallinn Music Week suggested the Baltic states will be the next region to burst on to the European music scene as the event featured 183 acts from the Baltic states and beyond. It was clear right from the start that last week’s Tallinn Music Week was not your ordinary music festival – and Estonia not your average country. The Estonian president, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, opened the festivities by reminiscing about his days at CBGBs in New York, mentioning Neil Young, quoting lyrics from PJ Harvey’s Let England Shake, and touching on the perils of being an outspoken musician when the country was part of the Soviet Union.

Since the company was founded 50 years ago, Marshall has become one of the most recognisable and iconic names in rock guitar, with the company’s unmistakable livery gracing stages across the globe. Jim Marshall started out as a drum kit retailer but began building amplifiers in the early 1960s, setting out to create a new valve guitar amplifier, using the Fender Bassman circuit as a model. With the sixth prototype, he hit upon ‘the Marshall sound’. The rest is history. (more…)

22-year-old Hunter Bridges is a talented front end engineer who can make your dreams into a reality. ”Front-end” engineers are the people who build the parts of Web sites that you actually see. That’s opposed to “back-end” engineers, who work on all the stuff behind the scenes — for instance, like storing information you enter (like your name) in a database, or making sure that an e-commerce site can take your order. When working with someone like Bridges, you should know as much as you can about different types of technologies. You also shouldn’t assume a transition to another platform is easy. (more…)

This is a guy I admire because of what he did when somebody burned his electric  guitar when he was just a kid, an act of Fate that saw him go on to have an entire career in music despite the loss of his most important possession at the time. I don’t know Peter White personally but I know one of his best friends who literally saved my life once, and I think Peter’s story is one that younger musicians might be encouraged by!

For nearly two decades, Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, he combines elements of jazz, pop and classical guitar to create a sound that is singular and at the same time accessible to a broad audience. “Once you’ve been touched by music then age doesn’t matter” PAUL WELLER

“D’you fancy a cup of tea?” asks Paul Weller. “I’m just about to make one.” In his dressing room before the final show of a five-night run at London’s Roundhouse, the Modfather is getting the drinks in. A few years ago, celebrating a No 1 album or backstage at one of his gigs would mean a full-on party. But today, a teetotal Weller doesn’t touch anything stronger than a cup of Tetley’s.

“I haven’t had a hangover in 18 months and I feel great,” says Weller, who admits that he was an alcoholic. (more…)

A musician who helped take regional sound to national stage

NASHVILLE — It is impossible to overstate the importance of Earl Scruggs to American music. A pioneering banjo player who helped create modern country music, his sound is instantly recognizable and as intrinsically wrapped in the tapestry of the genre as Johnny Cash’s baritone or Hank Williams’ heartbreak.

Scruggs passed away Wednesday morning at 88 of natural causes. The legacy he helped build with bandleader Bill Monroe, guitarist Lester Flatt and the rest of the Blue Grass Boys was evident all around Nashville, where he died in an area hospital. His string-bending, mind-blowing way of picking helped transform a regional sound into a national passion. (more…)
